Making the right decission with your remodeling contractor

Everyone wants their home to look the best it can; this often starts with selecting the best contractor. When selecting the right renovation contractor to work on your home there are two major choices that will influence your satisfaction with your renovation purchase:

  1. Hiring the right contractor.
  2. Choosing the highest quality materials.

Of these two important choices, selecting the right contractor is the most important! The right contractor will have products available that meet your needs and budget.  The right contractor will have the credentials, integrity and experience to help you through the buying process and handle your job in a timely, efficient and professional manner ensuring peace of mind and beautiful results.

A few more guidelines, and points to consider:

  1. Call the Better Business Bureau in your area and request their pamphlet How to hire a remodeling Contractor.
  2. Select several companies with a good complaint record, and verify their record with the Better Business Bureau. Remember, any company can get a complaint; it's how the complaint is handled that is most important.
  3. Lowest price is not always best value. Many companies, realizing that it is easier to win the job if the price is low, will look for ways to cut corners. Many improvements require no inspection. There is often no written specification on home improvement projects. These are some of the reasons that home improvement ranks near the top in consumer complaints.
  4. Make sure that you and your contractor are on the same page. Do not allow any work to start without a written agreement detailing all work to be done, estimated time frame and a payment schedule.
  5. Do not pay in full until the job is completed to your satisfaction. Many contractors will require some sort of down payment, but make sure not to pay the final balance until all work is completed, and you are happy with the results.
  6. Be reasonable. If things do go wrong, most good contractors will go out of their way to correct the situation. Cordial discussion of concerns, is always warranted, and is more likely to achieve the desired result.
  7. Review pictures of their work portfolio. Do their pictures look like the kind of work you want done to your home?
  8. Does the contractor perform a clean-up every day, or just at the end of the project? Most people do not want their yard looking like a mess while a project is being completed.
